The Amazing Benefits Of Lemons

In my family we have experienced the benefits of incorporating lemons in our diet from lemon water first thing in the mornings to juicing the entire lemon, putting whole lemons in smoothies etc. The leader of the women’s ministry group that I am in asked me to do a presentation on the benefit of a fruit, I chose to research more on the therapeutic benefits of lemons and this is what I found. Limes also have similar therapeutic benefits, therefore if you are located where limes are more readily available you may be able to substitute limes for lemons.

Lemons originate from India, then spreading globally to temperate and tropical regions of the world. They were sought after by early sailors to prevent or treat Vitamin C deficiency, also known as scurvy. It is grown on an evergreen shrub and the tree produces ripe yellow fruits practically all year round. It is highly prized in the manufacturing industry for lemon oil, lemon juice, pectin, and citric acid.

Medicinally, lemons have been used for thousands of years. They contain Vitamin C or ascorbic acid, citric acid, flavonoids, Vitamin B6, magnesium, calcium, potassium, copper, phosphorus, iron, and fiber. The fruit is low in calories – 29 calories per 100 grams – contains no saturated fats, nor cholesterol. Although lemon is acidic when eaten, it has an alkalizing and purifying effect on the blood. This is done by the combination of citric acid and magnesium in the fruit. Individual lemon water or juice has been found to have many medicinal benefits, as it tends to promote urination, relieve menopausal symptoms, and help prevent urinary tract infections.

Although lemon juice can be purchased in bottles for less, it is not as healthful and beneficial to the body as freshly-squeezed juice. It is important to get a fresh juice, not juice that has been pasteurized. Now days, most juice is pasteurized in order to maintain shelf life. If juice is pasteurized, much of the vitamins in the juice are destroyed. However, as long as you get a fresh bottle of juice you will still get the vitamins from the juice.

It’s easy to not only drink lemon juice excessively, but you can also apply it topically where it counts! I’ve read and heard that whitening your teeth by rubbing lemon juice on them enamelwise for 10 minutes can remove tartar build-up. As long as you are not microwaving the lemon juice, I’m sure it will not do any damage. It must be applied to the tooth enamel for that to occur. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone microwaving a lemon and getting it stuck to the enamel.

The only way to remove tartar build-up from the teeth is to either get a root canal done to eliminate the need for toothpaste, or to get a root lab referral.

In addition to the benefits of lemons on the outside of the body, they can give you great health on the inside as well. Lemons have been known to improve liver function, improve sweating and liver function and can even help with hot flashes. When the outer layer of the skin is dry, it functions like an onion, and when the skin is dry from using the bathroom or from exercising, it acts more like a tomato.

Lemons hydrates and the water in them is great for your skin.
