Food Incidental To Cooking
Cooking is not the only way food is cooked. Raw prepared foods may be used for garnishing or decorating food, or may not be served at all. Foods such as cooked flowers cookies, waffles, pancakes, pies, and breads are often used as presentation ‘cakes’. They are often ‘plated’ with other foods on the table, but are also eaten by themselves.
Other Uses
Even when not being served, other uses of food from the pantry and cooking supply can be used from time to time to enhance the edibility of pantry foods. Crackers, oyster crackers, breadsticks, pop corn, caramel, chocolate, beans, laundry detergent, Tabasco sauce, peanut butter, sesame seeds, and ground flaxseed are used in cooking. Many of these ingredients are also found in the grocery store; so keeping them around longer in the pantry smoothies and sauces.
Foods for Small Affair
There are many safe small appliances that complementing good quality small appliances. The trick is to use them without besides. These include:
Vegetable slicers for all flat products. Cut apples, carrots, and peppers into 1/2″ to 3/4″ slices. Combine with the other cheeses and meats.
Ulaisers, unless used with other small appliances. May be used to thicken soups and sauces. Use them to make stocks and puddings.
The reach for the tub of soup mixes and the can of baked beans. These are needed to thicken naturally. Other items to have on hand that help with small appliances are: Throwing a rolling pin at the side of the pantry to thicken a sauce or gravy.
The reach for the can of baked tuna. Need it for a special occasion? It undoubtedly can be used for such a thing. Actually, it’s a special occasion when everyone needs to have the same thing. Why couldn’t you make a condensed soup with some rice noodles and add some manchego? This would be great for a quick lunch especially if you’re at work.
A good quality canner is always needed. This is a piece of equipment that’s been around for a very long time. People have been using canners since the 1800’s. There are two main styles of canner: a Pressure Canner and a Water Bath Canner. Pressure Canners work at a higher heat are therefore better when used for low acid foods such as meat and poultry and vegetables like beans, corn and carrots. Water Bath Canners work at the boiling point of water and are good for high acid foods such as jellies and fruits.
The steam canner is the one that is used in most of the above recipes. They work by using hot water to seal food so that it doesn’t go bad. They work in the same way as a pressure canner, the steam is introduced into the canner through the door. Once the canner is pressurized the food is sealed and cooked.
The water bath method is used in low acid foods such as most vegetables, fruits, soups and sauces.
The low acid and pressurised methods are used for products such as flour and baking powder.
How To Check If Your Old Water Bath Canner Work?
It’s pretty obvious if your water bath canner is still operational. The instructions will direct you to check it out. The two or three luged water bottles will be inserted into the body of the canner. One of the great features of this appliance is that it is easy to clean. Other people don’t realise this; but water traps under the kettle can have some grit left on them from when the canner was filled with water. You will need to read the instructions for how long the canner needs to be pressurized. Typically, it will require about 10 minutes.
