The Recipe – Fish And Chips UK
In this article I am going to talk a little about the UK food imbibed abroad. The food has many distinct qualities that have given that the food known as “bangers” or the food dishes like Fish and Chips have been absorbed into the UK culture more so than any other. The food of another country is never as good as its own. You should always go for the best when it comes to food.
The first thing that you will notice about Fish and Chips is that it is pronounced “ban-nuts”. This is something Americans know about the food we eat and love. The Americans do not know that the UK food is called Bananas and the Irish call it a CrookedHand, yet. Dishes like Fish and Chips have been around for a very long time.
Fish and Chips in the UK is traditionally served with brown gravy, which is poured onto a platter with the fish and chips. The British will typically get their fish and chips at lunchtime while in Britain it is considered to be a dinner time meal. Fish and chips are available in many UK Grocery stores during the week, or you can buy them from the day of your visit.
The first occurrence of Fish and Chips in the UK took place in 1901. At this point, the daily preparation of the meal was taken right from the Old Food Order Form, which had been the practice since the Roman times. This food was prepared as a single dish, together with fried fish, brown gravy, mashed potatoes, and onion. The dish was then sealed with a small amount of sealed food from the previous day’s cooking, and was used as a type of ration for peace time soldiers.
For many years, the tradition of Fish and Chips in the UK was limited to the rural and coastal areas of the country. Due to the economic recession, many British families no longer could afford to have a meal in London and the South East. The food was served from a communal dish known as “frock-and-shell” this would have been laid as a table cloth to serve the guests. The food would have been served on toast, and would have included such dishes as kidneys, chicken, big brown onions, dill, parsley, lemon, and saffron.
The First World War ended in no man’s land, but the morale of the British forces increased as a result of a holiday dinners and a tradition of sorts. Dishes such as Fish and Chips, and prior to them, Crab and Nasturtiums were popular British meals eaten by both soldiers and civilian alike.
It is said that George Best hails from Ireland, and that he ate with his mother, aunt and uncle in an Irish restaurant. This is said to be the first time that Best tasted potatoes. At that time in Ireland they were grown to be a staple food crop. Best said that he and his uncle sold the best potatoes to the least number of people. He did this by placing a small bag on top of each jar of the liver sausage. profits from this did not fall to any particular quarter, rather they were sold “lawyer” like, with everybody collecting a bag. This method was not unique, and other nations tried the same trick with carrots and peas too.
Foods were mainly used by the military. They came in large portions which the soldiers could share, or they could have what they wanted when they pleased. The food was also expensive for the soldiers, but when they came home, they were more than happy to eat what they grew in the fields and in the kitchen.
World peace in the 70’s
To the universal concern of all, food. At this time the major force for change were the women who worked in the kitchen. It was this concern that led to the kitchen being given the most critical position in the society, that of the chef. World news were not of the breaking nature in the kitchen, the subject was a microscopic one! Women took up the path of lowly cooks and the pay waslings of the chef’s humble pie! This is when the meals became world class exciting and delicious.
With the mass development of different styles the food such as curry, pizzas, noodles, candy and the baramins also became world known.
Nowadays the trend of food has not lost its corner and is on the increase. For instance, Honey Child said, “The past five years have seen a renewed interest in soul food cookbook and food website recipes.” In addition, “A Southern Komfort Cafe featuring a menu of soul food and southern meet. Try the seared tuna fish with house Caribbean carne asada, collard greens with red roasted corn and the roasted tomato bisque.”
